AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and other post-secondary opportunities, especially those traditionally underrepresented in higher education.
Jay Mathews details his "Why AVID" story -- one of a skeptic turned advocate. Working with Matthews, AVID is collecting stories from current and former students and educators to better understand the impact that AVID is having.
Mathews writes: "Lots of journalists write about education by asking questions about why schools are so bad. I thought it might be useful to find the best schools and the best teachers, particularly teachers and schools that were helping low-income kids and minority kids, and find out why they were doing so well -- what they were doing to raise these kids up to a level that no one expected. That led me to AVID."
In this brief video, Tuffree Middle School 7th grader Luis Jasso and former principal, Rose Marie Baldwin-Shirey, share their " Why AVID" story.
